School-based Mentoring
Our New Mentoring Programmes
Making a Difference, One Match at a Time
At Big Brothers Big Sisters Auckland, we’re expanding our reach to support more tamariki and rangatahi through three exciting new mentoring programmes. Whether you’re a volunteer, a school, or a business, you can be part of something truly life-changing.
School Based
Group Mentoring
For: Intermediate-aged tamariki (10-12 years old)
Where: At participating schools
Commitment: 10-week programme, 2 hours per week across a school term
The School-Based Group Mentoring programme provides tamariki with the opportunity to grow in confidence, build resilience, and develop leadership skills in a safe, supportive space.
- Led by a trained facilitator, supported by 2-3 mentors
- Interactive sessions with fun, engaging activities
- Opportunities for businesses and orgnaisations to be involved and upskill or run fun workshops or sessions with students.
- Helps young people develop positive connections and essential life skills, building emotional intelligence and removing barriers to mentoring.
School Based
Kura Mentoring
For: Primary and intermediate students
Where: At participating schools
Commitment: 1 hour per week during school hours
The Mentors in Schools Programme is all about friendship, fun, and positive role models. Tuakana (mentors) and teina (mentees) meet during school hours to spend quality time together—whether that’s playing games, baking, or simply chatting.
- Schools partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters to offer mentoring
- Matches are carefully made to ensure a strong connection
- A simple way to make a lasting impact in a young person’s life
School Based
Teen-Based Mentoring
For: College students (Year 11-13) mentoring primary school children
Where: At a local primary school
Commitment: 1 hour per week
This peer mentoring programme allows high school students to give back by supporting younger tamariki in their community.
- College students receive training and guidance
- Mentors and mentees have access to a resource box filled with fun activities
- A rewarding way for students to develop leadership and communication skills
